Being a working mom often times means juggling a thousand moving pieces, from meetings, meal prep, school/sport activities to work projects with heavy deadlines. But in the midst of all of that chaos, there comes a moment when you realize: you’ve outgrown your current role.
If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time to take the next step in your career, let me share the five signs I learned from first hand experience and how to confidently ask for what you’ve earned. (Note: I explain this and so much more in my book: From Engineer to IT Manager .)
You’re Already Operating at the Next Level
In From Engineer to IT Manager, I talk about how your promotion often times begin before your title changes. So the questions is…Are you already:
If you’re already doing the work, it’s a strong sign that you’re ready to make it official.
Tip: Keep a “brag file” with wins, leadership moments, and feedback that shows you are next-level material.
You Solve Problems Before They Reach Your Boss
Leadership isn’t just about authority, it’s about ownership. If you’re catching issues early, creating solutions, and helping others navigate challenges, you’re demonstrating exactly what senior roles require.
Reflect: Are you a go-to person when things get messy? That’s leadership!
You Have a Vision Beyond Your Current Role
Maybe you’re tapped to present in meetings, join special task forces or liaise with other departments. That’s more than visibility, it’s trust in your judgement and presence.
In my journey, these invitations were my cue to prepare for my next title, not just another task.
Action Step: Start owning those opportunities. Don’t just be in the room – lead.
You’re Hungry for Growth, Not Just Praise
You’re not looking for just recognition, you’re looking for more responsibility, growth, and work that aligns with your long-term goals. That’s hunger and that’s what drive true leaders.
Remember: Being ready for a promotion doesn’t mean you know everything, it just means you’re ready to grow into more.
How to Ask for the Promotion (With Confidence and Clarity)
Schedule the Conversation Intentionally
Be intentional with your next steps. Don’t wait for your review. Book a meeting with your manager and set the context ahead of time:
“I’d like to discuss my career growth and the next steps in my journey here”
Be Prepared
Bring your “brag” file. Show how your work aligns with the responsibilities of the next-level. Use language like:
“Over the past six months, I’ve led X, delivered Y, and solved for Z. It’s these actions that aligns with the expectations of [next role].”
Make the Ask Direct and Professional
“I believe I’m ready to move into [desired role] and I’d like to discuss what the path looks like for that transition.”
Follow Up with a Plan
If it’s not an immediate yes, ask for clarity:
- W
- W
As a mom, as a leader, and as a women in tech, I know how easy it is to wait for someone else to notice your worth. But you don’t have to wait, you can lead yourself forward.
You’ve already done the work. Now it’s time to step into the title that reflects it.
Your next move isn’t just about a raise, it’s about the what I like to call the “ripple effect” your growth will enhance your family, your team, and your future.
